Son of a naval officer, I grew up in Los Angeles & Jakarta. In my twenties, I backpacked around Africa for 4 years. Fell in love with it. Now working on a PhD at Yale in African history. My research looks at South African port culture - the lives of sailors, dockers and prostitutes. I live in Cape Town, where I recently published "Sugar Girls & Seamen: A Journey into the World of Dockside Prostitution in South Africa." Written in a lively, juicy style, the book explores the gritty world of dockside "romance" in all its raw vitality & fragile humanity.
