Douglas H. Shantz (b. 1952) grew up in Kitchener, Ontario. He completed his PhD in History in 1987 at the University of Waterloo, studying the Radical Reformation with Werner Packull. From August 1999 to July 2016 he held the Chair of Christian Thought at the University of Calgary, Canada. Since his research sabbatical in Marburg, Germany in 1992-1993, his work has focused on 17th and 18th century German Pietism. Shantz's articles and books examine Pietist millennialism, Pietist autobiographies, Pietism and the German Enlightenment, Pietist Court Preachers, and Pietism and Alchemy. His latest publications include "An Introduction to German Pietism" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013 ) and his edited book, "A Companion to German Pietism, 1660-1800" (Brill, 2015).
