I’m Richard Humphries: teacher, traveler and writer. After leaving university, I set out to see the world. In my case, that included following the hippie trail to India, crossing the West African Sahara, traveling up Sudan’s Nile in a rusted barge ferry and hitchhiking to Alaska. Later, I earned two master’s degrees: in English language education and in international conflict resolution.
While teaching language and media literacy skills at Japanese universities, I contributed to numerous English-language newspapers and magazines. Over 100 of my articles and more than 400 photographs appeared in print, with travel, conflict and human rights being common themes. During 2012/3, I helped launch Myanmar’s first English-language, weekly economic magazine.
I’ve also thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, walked Spain’s Camino de Santiago, and, in January 2019, trekked to Everest Base Camp.
