Benjamín Puertas D.

Benjamín Puertas Donoso (1962) was born in Quito, Ecuador, and he currently lives in Lima, Perú. A medical doctor with a Master in Public Health from University of Illinois, Puertas lived for two years in Malawi, Mozambique where he worked for Medicins Sans Frontieres and American Refugee Committee in refugee camps. For twelve years he taught at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, becoming Dean of the School of Public Health. In 2008 he won the National Literary Award for short stories with Entre Desvelos y Sonatas (Ministerio de Cultura, 2008). Among his books: La Era del Trueno (Universidad San Francisco de Quito, 2011), Sukanka: Los Pilares del Horizonte (Grupo Editorial Norma, 2005), Transparencias de un Sueño (Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana, 2002), Accross the Footsteps of Africa (Africa World Press, EE.UU. 1998), Tras las Huellas de África, (Abya Yala, 1995). Currently he is a DrPh in Public Health candidate at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
