James Bettley

James Bettley is an architectural historian, whose publications include revised editions of the Pevsner Architectural Guides to Hertfordshire (2019), Suffolk ('Suffolk: East' and 'Suffolk: West', 2015) and Essex (2007). Before joining the Pevsner Architectural Guides he worked for the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Design Museum, and the Royal Institute of British Architects, and he gained a Ph.D. from the Courtauld Institute of Art in 1999 for his thesis on 'The Reverend Ernest Geldart (1848-1929) and late nineteenth-century church decoration'. He is Librarian of Chevening House, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and a member of the Church Buildings Council. He has published extensively in a wide range of professional and other magazines, including 'Country Life', and has also contributed to successive volumes of the Victoria History of the County of Essex. He has lived in Essex, in the village of Great Totham, since 1991.
