Terry A. Wolfer

Terry A. Wolfer, MSW (1984, Ohio State), PhD (1995, Chicago) is a Professor in the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina. Wolfer has extensive case method teaching and training experience. For more than twenty years, he has taught a case-based capstone course for MSW students. Each year, he has provided training for new instructors and led the group of faculty colleagues who teach the course in weekly prep sessions. In addition, Wolfer has led faculty development institutes on case method teaching and/or case writing at national conferences for social work educators, and 1-3 day case method workshops for social work faculty at several universities in the United States and abroad. In 2019, he provided training in case teaching and case writing with a Fulbright Specialist award to National University of Singapore.



Wolfer has won several awards. For case writing, he was awarded the C. R. Christensen Award for the Outstanding Teaching Case by the North American Case Research Association in 2004. For his cumulative work on case method teaching and case writing, Wolfer was awarded the “CSWE Distinguished Recent Contributions in Social Work Education Award” by the Council on Social Work Education in 2009. For innovative strategies to improve student learning, he was awarded the “Garnet Apple Award” by the Office of the Provost and the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of South Carolina in 2016.
