Judith Bula Wise

Judith Bula Wise is an emerita professor who has held academic positions at Columbia University and the University of Denver. Her award-winning first book, Empowerment Practice with Families in Distress, received these words from one reviewer: "This book is a masterful blend of the processes and principles of family-centered social work practices seen through the powerful lens of empowerment and strengths."

Her second book, Trauma Transformed: An Empowerment Response, is an anthology co-edited with colleague Marian Bussey. It is a Robert Wood Johnson Exemplary Publication Award Nominee. "Trauma Transformed is one of the most fascinating books to come out in social work in some time," writes Katherine Van Wormer. "The use of personal narratives is extremely effective. Rare for an edited volume, each chapter is as beautifully written as the last."

Dr. Wise developed and served as the first Coordinator of the Trauma Response Certificate Program at the University of Denver. She received the Outstanding Professor Award at Columbia University School of Social Work in 1987. Her international contributions included work with survivors of Chernobyl sponsored by IREX (International Research Exchanges Board) and teaching at the China Youth College in Beijing, P.R.C.

Dr. Wise is the 2015 recipient of the Mayborn Fellowship in Biography. She is writing the biography of Edna Aikin Baldwin, an early 20th century playwright and human rights advocate who lived and worked in Burma in the 1920s and early 1930s.
