Michael A. Sheridan

Michael Sheridan is an American architect and leading scholar of twentieth-century Danish architecture and design. Since 2003, Sheridan has lectured internationally and published seven books on those topics. He holds a doctorate in architecture from the Royal Danish Academy and divides his time between New York and Copenhagen.

Author’s statement, December 2024:

My exploration of Danish architecture and design is rooted in my understanding of European modernism, which originated in avant-garde art during the 1920s and advocated a break with tradition that was based on industrial technology. As an alternative, a number of Danish (and Nordic) architects and designers worked to extend traditional values using modernist principles of standardization and fitness to purpose. That Nordic approach to modernism is one of the most inspiring and valuable episodes in the history of twentieth-century culture, because it was rooted in social and environmental concerns that have only become more pressing with the passage of time.

In a sense, each one of my books is a chapter in a larger story that I continue to write, as I expand my focus from individuals to larger circles of actors across the Nordic region. My most recent book — Archetypes: Essential Works of Danish Design — examines household objects designed by a group of artisans and architects whose works reflected common values, most notably a respect for the people who would live with their things. As before, I have pursued a union of images and ideas using language that does not require specialized knowledge of the field. In doing so, I hope to make these treasures accessible to anyone interested in a design culture that offers lessons for a sustainable future.
