I have been working in education for 30 years. I started as an English teacher, worked to become a reading specialist and then earned a PhD in secondary reading at Syracuse University. My first job as a professor was at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, where I worked with teachers in Anchorage and the Northwest Arctic School District. After that, I moved to Michigan where I have been a professor at Michigan State University for the past 20 plus years. Currently, I direct and teach in a program where we send 250 Michigan State beginning teachers to tutor in Lansing, MI's schools. My work in state level assessment was the basis for my book Connecting Standards and Assessment through Literacy. My work with beginning and experienced subject matter teachers is the foundation for my book Content Area Literacy: Learners in Context.
