Robin M. Hogarth

Hello! I am an emeritus professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. In fact, I am a relic of the British Empire. Born in India to British parents during World War II, I was sent “back” to Scotland as a child to be educated. Subsequently, I gained a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1972 and also became a U.S. citizen.

I do not have an undergraduate degree. After leaving high school, I became a chartered accountant in the UK by being an “apprentice” (called “articled clerk”). But in 1967, I headed for France to do an MBA at INSEAD. From there, it was on to the PhD at Chicago. I subsequently became a professor at the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, after holding positions at INSEAD and the London Business School.

My research focusses on the psychology of judgment and decision making. In 2007 I was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Lausanne. At Chicago (1979 to 2001) I served as Deputy Dean (1993 to 1998), Director of the Center for Decision Research (1983-1993) and Wallace W. Booth Professor of Behavioral Science. I was also responsible for setting up the executive MBA program in Europe.

Today, I live in Barcelona with my Catalan wife and struggle daily with both Spanish and Catalan. I enjoy visiting my three children and five grandchildren who all live in Northern California. British friends insist I have a US accent, Americans think I'm English, and neither the Spanish nor the Catalans care in the slightest.
