James D. Geyer

Dr. James Geyer is one of those rare individuals who had a true calling to be a doctor. His passion for medicine, gift for communication, deep understanding of medicine, and empathy for patients, gives him a unique perspective on the care and treatment of sleep disorders. An important part of his practice is to help educate patients to understand their sleep disorder in order to better manage it. Through his nationally recognized sleep center, he has successfully treated thousands of patients suffering from sleep disorders. This book is the culmination of his 20+ year career of successful clinical treatment which will help patients take control and manage their sleep disorder.

Dr. Geyer is the director of the Sleep Program at Alabama Neurology and Sleep Medicine and DCH Sleep Center. Through his accredited facilities and with the vital help of his experienced staff, Dr. Geyer has successfully treats thousands of patients suffering from sleep disorders every year. He is also the medical director of one of the few Behavioral Sleep Medicine Training Programs in the United States, providing specialized education for trainees specializing in insomnia and other aspects of behavioral sleep medicine. He has developed a comprehensive education programs for patients, caregivers, nurses and physicians which are used throughout the country.

After medical school at the University Of Alabama School Of Medicine, Dr. Geyer completed neurology training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, serving as chief resident in his final year. He then completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology including sleep medicine at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. He obtained his undergraduate degrees in biomedical and electrical engineering from Duke University and subsequently led the engineering teams in the development of several brain monitoring systems at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama.

He helped develop the University of Alabama Rural Health Network and served as the Program Director for the Rural Health Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. His research has included projects investigating the pathophysiology of epilepsy and sleep disorders, and the development of novel technology for the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. He has served as the Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator, or Consultant on numerous National Institutes of Health and Medical Industry sponsored research projects involving sleep medicine and epilepsy. Dr. Geyer is diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Geyer is an advisory board member for the several pharmaceutical companies developing sleep-related medications. He has also co-authored numerous medical journal articles and has served as a reviewer for a variety of medical journals. He lectures frequently on sleep related disorders and treatments.
