Paul D. Escott

Born in 1947 in St. Louis, Paul Escott earned a BA cum laude from Harvard and his MA and Ph.D. from Duke University. After teaching 14 years at UNC Charlotte, he moved to Wake Forest University, where he became Reynolds Professor of History. He has used primary sources to revise myths about the Confederacy in the first half of his career, and about the North in the second half of his career. His works focus on race, class, and social conflict in the mid-nineteenth century.
