Susan Hall is an author and filmmaker. She also writes music and theatre criticism.
Of her writing for Down Home published by McGraw Hill, Ralph Ellison wrote: "...with...Susan Hall's insightfully and subtly edited text before us, there is far less need to speculate abstractly about the effects of social turbulence which wracked Alabama. We are placed on the scene, we overhear the overtones and undertones of the felt dialogues of those who lived through the drama." Hall allows the reader "a vivd sense of the enigmatic ways in which the rituals and manners of the past have worked to frustrate, modify and reshape brace hopes and actions."
Of Down Home, Susan Sontag wrote: "Coauthor Susan Hall, interviewed them (the subjects). Pictures aren’t enough. And their striking declarations lend a weight to the photographs they would probably not have on their own."
