Jay E. Hakes

Jay Hakes is a widely respected energy analyst, having served as head of the Florida Energy Office and the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the data and analytic arm of the U.S. Department of Energy. He was also served as the director of the Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta. Hakes wrote the 2008 book A Declaration of Energy Independence, which provided a historical perspective on American oil dependence and suggestions on how to end it.

In 2021, Hakes published Energy Crises: Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Hard Choices in the 1970s. He is already at work on a future book on the history of the climate change debate. He says of his work: "I have concluded that historical narratives can make a great contribution to a deeper understanding of our current challenges."
