Deborah D. Avant

I am professor and Sié Chéou-Kang Chair for International Security and Diplomacy at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver. I write about civil-military relations, and the roles of governmental (such as presidents, legislatures and militaries) and non-governmental (such as companies, civil society organizations, expert groups, standards organizations, and more) in controlling violence and generating governance. I draw ideas for my arguments from philosophy, sociology, economics, anthropology, and history as well as political science. I also oversee the Private Security Monitor (http://psm.du.edu/) and am an observer member of the International Code of Conduct [for private security providers] Association (ICoCA)
