Ben van der Pluijm is the Bruce R. Clark Collegiate Professor of Geology and Professor of the Environment at the University of Michigan. His research area focuses on deformation of the Earth's crust, from microscope to mountain belt, and societal resilience. In addition to lower and upper level courses and directing the interdisciplinary Global Change Program, his educational activities include the use of information technologies to enhance students' learning experiences.
Ben has served on a host of department, college and university committees. In the U-M Provost's office, he headed the University's activities for re-accreditation. This three-year self-study involved all campus units and included a campus-wide study on internationalization. He also chaired the U-M President's Interdisciplinary Learning Initiative. Ben has served on several (inter)national agency panels, including the National Science Foundation and the International Ocean Drilling Program, and organizations, including the Geological Society of America and American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has had multiple editorial roles, including editor of GSA's GEOLOGY, and, currently, editor-in-chief of AGU's Earth's Future. He has (co-)authored >190 peer-reviewed articles, edited several book volumes, published two editions of the textbook "Earth Structure", and online text "Processes in Structural Geology and Tectonics".
