Jeff Smith is Professor and Dean of the College of Education at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Prior to Otago, he taught at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and was the Head of the Office of Research and Evaluation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He received his bachelors degree from Princeton University in 1972 and his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1977. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. He has written or edited ten books and over 80 articles on learning in museums, the psychology of aesthetics, and educational psychology. He is the founding editor of the journal, Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts. He received the Rudolph Arnheim Award for from the American Psychological Association and the Gustav Fechner Award from the International Association of Empirical Aesthetics.
