Sherri Shafer

Sherri Shafer RD, CDCES, had a fulfilling 30-year career at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center. As a senior registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist, she counseled thousands of people in the pediatric and adult diabetes clinics and the diabetes and pregnancy program. Working with a team of diabetes experts, she taught nutrition and diabetes self-management concepts. Sherri has a knack for distilling complex info into tangible self-care strategies. Her goal is to empower people with the information and skills they need to manage their diabetes.

Sherri has extensive teaching experience as an instructor for the multi-day diabetes self-management workshops at the UCSF Diabetes Teaching Center. She also provided annual lectures to medical, nursing, and physical therapy students. She’s lectured for diabetes conferences and medical conventions, as well as contributed content to healthcare websites and professional publications. Her recorded presentations are included curriculum for medical continuing education programs.

In 2016 Sherri received the PRIDE award for demonstrating professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity and excellence in her career at UCSF. In 2005 she received the Excellence in Teaching Award, through the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.

Sherri is the author of Diabetes and Carb Counting for Dummies (2017) and its 2nd edition (2024) published by Wiley. Her first book was Diabetes Type 2: Complete Food Management Program (Random House).

Sherri retired in 2022 and is spending time with family and friends, and is engaging in a wide range of outdoor activities.
