The north London of the 1950s was an enchanting, if in retrospect dangerous playground for children, and Philip Casey, who was born there to Irish parents, frequently slipped away from home to play in the bomb-sites of Highgate.
This experience was the germ of his novel The Water Star.
His family later settled on a farm in Ireland. The picturesque landscape of north Wexford features in his three, much-praised novels to date, The Fabulists, The Water Star and The Fisher Child, which comprise The Bann River Trilogy. Also a poet, he recently published his selected poems Tried and Sentenced.
A decade ago, his niece Iseult (now an actress), asked him to write her a story. It’s been a long time coming, but The Coupla, a contemporary and magical twist on Irish legend, is here at last for ages 9 to 90 and over.
A member of Aosdána, Philip lives in Dublin, and is currently writing non-fiction – a history of the Irish in Ireland and across the world.
