Oliver Marshall

Oliver Marshall first went to Brazil in 1982, arriving by train from Bolivia. After nine months in the Andes getting increasingly fed up of being so clearly identifiable as a foreigner, it was a huge relief to be able to walk along a Brazilian street and not to be noticed as a gringo. Since then, Oliver has returned, whenever possible, to Brazil for study, work and, above all, pleasure. He is co-author of The Rough Guide to Brazil (for which he has particular responsibility for the chapters on Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais & Espírito Santo, São Paulo and the South) and of The Rough Guide to Rio de Janeiro. He has contributed travel articles on Brazil and other parts of the world to British, Austrian and Canadian newspapers and magazines.

Oliver is also the author or editor of history-related books including English, Irish and Irish-American Pioneer Settlers in Nineteenth-Century Brazil (Oxford, 2005) and Stefan and Lotte Zweig's South American Letters: New York, Argentina and Brazil 1940-42 (New York and London, 2010), which is also available in French, (Brazilian)-Portuguese, German and Italian editions.
