Joyce E. Williams (1937- ) was born and grew up in central Texas, the last of four children. She earned a bachelor's degree from Mary Hardin-Baylor College, a master's degree from Southern Methodist University, and a Ph. D. from Washington University, St. Louis, all in sociology. After working for several years as a social worker in Dallas, TX. she began a career in college teaching. Over the course of almost four decades she taught sociology at Mary Hardin-Baylor College, Arlington State College, Trinity University, and Texas Woman's University from which she retired in 2003 after some 22 years, almost half of those as chair of the Department of Sociology and Social Work. She is the author of four books and numerous articles and book chapters.
