Professional Activities

• Research Psychologist, Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum and Co-Director, Hawaiian Community Research Project (1966-1972).

• Co-founded with Roland Tharp, Kamehameha Elementary Education Project (KEEP, 1969-1980), a laboratory and demonstration school for Native Hawaiians.

• In 1975, with Roland Tharp observed and analyzed teaching practices of legendary UCLA coach John Wooden. Interviewed Coach Wooden on several occasions, the results of which were published in a followup article and book co-authored with Swen Nater.

• Directed a longitudinal study of immigrant Latino/a students and their families (1988 to 2005),

• Collaborated with Claude Goldenberg and Bill Saunders on prospective instructional improvement studies in Southern California (1981 to present).

• Conducted a longitudinal study with Tom Weisner, Barbara Keogh, & Lucinda Bernheimer (1984-1999) of families with children with early developmental delays.

• Co-founded with Jim Stigler LessonLab and co-directed the TIMSS Video Studies of Teaching.

• Currently, conducts research on improvement of teaching and coaching.
