Walking is at the centre of many of my writings because I believe that it's the best way to get to know a landscape, its history and its inhabitants. I particularly enjoy mountains and wilderness places and I am more interested in the journey in all its details than the speed or distance I travel.

I practised architecture and had an academic post in the Dublin School of Architecture for many years, and I was a Fellow of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland when I took an alternative career path in the year 2000.

My first book, a walking guide for families, was published in 1988. I have had a further seventeen books published since then, initially about walking and journeys on foot, but latterly dealing increasingly with other interests such as history and architecture. In 1993 I began to write for magazines and since then I have produced over 400 articles Walking is at the centre of many of my writings because I believe that it's the best way to get to know a landscape, its history and its inhabitants. I also illustrate books, write book reviews, and have contributed to television and radio programmes.

I am married to Teresa and we have four grown-up children and five grandchildren. We live most of the year in Dublin, Ireland, but in spring and summer, when not traveling, we divide our time between Dublin and our cottage in county Waterford, on the south coast.
