Syed V. Ahamed

Syed V. Ahamed received his Ph.D. and D. Sc. (E.E.) degrees from the University of Manchester and his MBA (Econ.) from the New York University. He taught at the University of Colorado for 2 years before joining AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1966. In 1982 he became a Professor of Computer Science at the City University of New York and a member of the Doctoral Faculty in 1985. He has taught at New York Polytechnic at Brooklyn as a visiting Professor of Computer Science from 1982 to 1986. Professor Ahamed has been a Telecommunications consultant to Bell Communications Research, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, Telecom Australia, ETH Zurich, and to Celcom, Malaysia. In Malaysia, he worked as a Management consultant to establish an IT platform and to design the high-speed backbone network.

He is the co-recipient of the 1981 IEEE Communications Society, Leonard G. Abraham Prize Paper Award and the co-recipient of the 1964 Honorable Citation for the IEEE Aerospace Society paper. In 1992 he became a Fellow of the IEEE for his seminal contribution to the Simulation and design studies of the High-speed Digital Subscriber Lines. The results published in the Bell System Technical Journal in 1982 form the basis for the later versions of the DSLs. He is listed in Marquis 1995, Who’s Who in the World and holds many such honors. He has also coauthored two other books: “Intelligent Broadband Multimedia Networks,” and “Design and Engineering of Intelligent Communications Systems,” based on his investigations of subscriber networks around the world for high-speed data. His doctoral students continue to contribute to knowledge processing systems and wisdom machines proposed by him in 1999 and 2002. In 2004, he wrote the book “The Art of Scientific Innovation,” for new doctoral students. In 2006, he wrote the precursor book, “Intelligent Internet Knowledge Networks, Processing of Concepts and Wisdom” dealing with the impact of the knowledge revolution on the human psyche and the subsequent enhancement of human needs. These two books are based on his teaching and mentoring scores of Ph.D. students at the Graduate Center of City University of New York. He holds over 20 American and European patents ranging from slip-meters for induction motors to medical networks for hospitals.
