Roy F. Fox

Roy F. Fox is Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Learning, Teaching, & Curriculum at the University of Missouri, where he also directed the Missouri Writing Project. He now serves as President of the Missouri Writing Project Collaborative.

Fox’s research focuses on the teaching and learning of writing and language, as well as media literacy. In addition to numerous chapters and articles, he is the author of twelve books, including Images in Language, Media, & Mind; Harvesting Minds: How TV Commercials Control Kids; and MediaSpeak: Three American Voices. His most recent book is, Facing the Sky: Composing through Trauma in Word and Image (2016).

Fox is the founding editor of Engaging Cultures & Voices: the Journal of Learning through Media. He has received the Maxine Christopher Shutz Award for Distinguished Teaching, the William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. Fox teaches graduate courses in the teaching of language, literature, and media, and regularly presents research on this topic at national and international conferences. In 2016, he served as a Fulbright Scholar to Ireland.

In his retirement, Fox has remained professionally active, including writing, painting, reading, traveling, biking, occasionally speaking, and delivering food for Meals on Wheels.
