I have been writing about and publishing on the First World War for many years, with a particular emphasis on women's experience, as my non-fiction books demonstrate. This work has resulted in my second novel, Where No Shadow Awaits, which was published in September 2025. It is the story of the relationship between a young British soldier, Joe, and Belgian girl, Gabrielle, living close to the front line at Ypres in 1917. This troubled relationship is investigated in the late 1980s by a freelance journalist, Helen Parkes, who has demons of her own to face.

My first novel, The Solace of the Common People, grew out of many discussions with students about literary representations of Richard III and offers an alternative history of that king. In my version he wins the Battle of Bosworth and reigns for forty years changing the course of history with no Tudors, no English Reformation and no more civil wars.

My third novel, The Suffraget, about a young man's journey through the campaign for women's suffrage in the first two decades of the twentieth century, will be published next year.
