Mary Collins

After more than three decades of teaching nonfiction writing at the college and graduate level at Johns Hopkins University, Yale, and in my current role as Program Coordinator of the Writing Minors at Central CT State University, I crafted this collection of flash nonfiction essays, inspired by my first experience with watercolor painting. My work has won major national awards, including Best Memoir of the Year from the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) for At the Broken Places: A Mother and Trans Son Pick Up the Pieces (Beacon), a top 10 ranking from the NY Public Library for my book on the Wright brothers (National Geographic), and Best Essay prizes for many of my narrative nonfiction stories. I am a veteran public speaker and workshop leader and plan to use my new book, A Play Book: Creating Writers, Creating Citizens, to lead programs on how to "Come to Your Senses" and return to a place of whimsy, reflection and creativity in writing and in life.
