Michael McLane

This is the first book of a trilogy on Indonesian sedimentary roks. It is not as provincial as the title suggests -- there is concise treatment of the fundamental concepts of sandstone petrology, and much of what can be said about Indonesian Cenozoic sandstones, it turns out, applies equally to sandstones of other places and other times. Indonesia embraces some of the most active and complex tectonics anywhere, and is a good place to examine the important influences of tectonism on origin and properties of sandstones. Moreover, most of the sandstones are young enough that their original textures and compositions and the early diagenetic features that they have acquired have not been obliterated by the effects of prolonged deep burial.

Try it. It's a bit technical in places, but, whether you are a professional or a serious student (and some of us try to be both), I think you will find that it's a better read than today's textbooks on sedimentology -- a mostly sorry lot -- and at least as useful and informative as any of the numerous specialty reference books on sandstones.

Michael McLane obtained the Ph.D. in Geology in 1972 at Indiana University, Bloomington. He has over 40 years experience teaching and consulting, including 16 years living and working in Indonesia as geological consultant to domestic and international oil & gas exploration companies operating in and around Indonesia; also conducted short courses in petrology and stratigraphy at Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB). He resides now in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
