I am a Reader Emeritus , University of London. I was a Reader in the Department of Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Physiology, UCL (University College London). My research was into cellular mechanisms of learning in the cerebral cortex of the brain, in particular Long-term potentiation of synaptic transmission in the cerebral cortex.
The Neurophysiology of the Cerebral Cortex, co-authored with Olof Lippold, arose out of the need to provide a text book on the topic for science students.
I enjoyed teaching and for some years I organized the first year, then second year physiology course for medical students at UCL, as previously had my co-authors.
The MCQs in Physiology, and MCQs in Neurophysiology allowed students to interpret data and practice calculations, as well as understand physiology. We tried to write challenging questions that demanded more than mere factual recall.
I was elected to the Committee of the Physiological Society, and am an Honorary member. The 75th anniversary of the election of the first six women to the Society was the motive for producing the book on Women Physiologists, celebrating their achievements.
