Piotr Bienkowski

Piotr Bienkowski was born in Wimbledon, London, to Polish parents who fought in the Warsaw Uprising. He is Emeritus Professor of Archaeology and Museology at the University of Manchester, and was Director of Manchester Museum and Head of Antiquities at National Museums Liverpool. He has directed excavations in southern Jordan since 1980, and published 17 books and over 100 peer-reviewed papers on archaeology, history, museum change, inclusion and participation. He was Editor of Levant, the journal of the Council for British Research in the Levant (1985-92), Annual Professor at the Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem (1999-2000), and Visiting Professor at Universität Münster (2024-5). He runs a consultancy specialising in change management, inclusion and community participation in the cultural sector, and directed Our Museum, the largest ever programme of organisational change in museums (2011-18).
