Paul Coggle

Paul Coggle graduated from Queen Mary, University of London in German and French and completed his teaching qualification at King’s College, London. After a year teaching German at Cornell University, New York, he returned to the UK to teach at one of the first comprehensive schools to be established in London. He was later appointed as Lecturer in German at the newly founded University of Kent, where he continued to develop his interest in technology-assisted language learning. He taught German at all levels and postgraduate courses in Translation Studies and Applied Linguistics.

In the early 1980s he established guidelines and selected authors for the Teach Yourself language courses in French, German, Italian and Spanish. He also assisted in the production of audio and video-based courses, such as the BBC’s Deutsch Plus.

In the 1990s Paul attracted media interest by drawing to the attention of the general public the phenomenon of Estuary English.

In more recent years Paul has been assisting with the development of online German materials as Senior Language Advisor at the University of Cambridge Language Centre. His interests include reading, film and the applied arts. He lives in the South Bank area of London.
