James L. McClelland

Jay (or James) McClelland is a leader in the science of the mind and its emergence from neural activity in the brain. Jay sees the mind as a precious yet fragile achievement of nature, and seeks to understand how it works, with the goal of helping himself and others to be productive, happy, and mutually engaged as citizens of a mindful, pro-social, and inclusive global community. The recipient of many major awards for his contributions to the science of the mind, Jay’s books include Parallel Distributed Processing: Explorations in the Microstructure of Cognition with David Rumelhart, Semantic Cognition: A Parallel-Distributed Processing Approach with Timothy Rogers, and The Emergent Mind: How Intelligence Arizes in People and Machines with Gaurav Suri. He is the Lucie Stern Professor in the Social Sciences and the Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, Computation, and Technology at Stanford University, and serves as a Senior Consultant Research Scientist at Google DeepMind.
