William Moylan

Professor William Moylan is Emeritus Professor of Sound Recording Technology and Music at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he has led the Sound Recording Technology program since 1983 and previously served as Chairperson of the Department of Music. In 2019 he was recognized as the Distinguished University Professor for 2019-2022—the highest honor given to a university faculty member. Dr. Moylan has over four decades of experience as a producer, recording engineer, composer, author, and educator, and was instrumental in developing the Sound Recording Technology program into a nationally and internationally recognized center for audio education. William Moylan has worked with leading artists and ensembles across a wide range of genres, with recordings released on major and independent labels and receiving multiple Grammy Award nominations. He is the author of several influential books, including Understanding and Crafting the Mix: The Art of Recording, Recording Analysis: How the Record Shapes the Song, and Analyzing Recorded Music, all of which have been widely adopted in recording and audio education internationally, and have supported the research of many scholars world-wide. His work on the artistic and technical aspects of recording, mixing, and analyzing music has influenced both academic research and professional practice, and he is recognized as a pioneer in critical listening and music production analysis.
