Lane H. Powell

Biographical Information

Dr. Lane Powell is a university professor, counselor, author, and conference leader with more than 40 years of professional experience in human relationships and interactions.

She holds degrees from Samford University (BA), New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (MRE) and Texas Tech University (PhD). She taught as a university professor for more than 30 years: first at her alma mater (Samford University in Birmingham) and most recently at Texas Tech University (Lubbock). She recently retired from fulltime teaching to devote more time to her other professional interests.

Dr. Powell is the co-author of the first textbook in Family Life Education and likes to engage adult learners in interactive education, which is the focus of Family Life Education. "Mine is not the ‘still’ philosophy of education (‘you sit still while I instill’). We all learn and grow from shared experiences and knowledge. I value that supremely."

Lane enjoys and cares for people. She spices her presentations with humor and illustrations. Her publications include three books designed for popular reading and growth: To Listen, To Love , Dating Book , and Holding Out for True Love. She is currently working on a "picture book of parenting" aimed particularly at teen parents and other basic readers.

A Licensed Professional Counselor (Alabama) for more than ten years, and a group facilitator for 25-plus years, Lane approaches her clients with comfort and an authority gained from both research and practice. As the mother of three adult children and the wife of one husband for 47 years, she understands the stress and struggle involved in maintaining close relationships. "It's the hardest thing we ever do, and we get the least amount of training for it."

She and husband Bob have worked to confront that lack of training for married couples, having been active in the Association of Couples for Marriage Enrichment for more than 35 years. As a certified leader couple they have facilitated retreats, keynoted state conventions, and are continually invited to present seminars at conferences.
