Julian Preece

Julian Preece is a professor of German at Swansea University. His first book Nine Lives: Ethnic Conflict in the Polish-Ukrainian Borderlands (1999) was the Observer paperback of the week on publication on the sixtieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. He has since written monographs or edited collections on the writers Günter Grass (2001 / 2004), Franz Kafka (2003), Veza and Elias Canetti (2007), Ilija Trojanow (2013), and the film director Andreas Dresen (2017). He has also published a survey of international literature and German terrorism: Baader-Meinhof and the Novel: Narratives of the Nation, Fantasies of the Revolution (2012). His most recent book in English is Katharina Blum in the BFI (British Film Institute) Classics Series (2022). In German he has written the introduction to Günter Grass's short novel Unkenrufe / Calls of the Toad for the Werkkommentare series published by de Gruyter (2023).
