Russell Merris

Russ is a retired California State University professor whose 40-year career included a National Academy of Sciences Postdoctoral Research Associateship at the (then) National Bureau of Standards (1969-71), a Fulbright Lectureship in Islamabad, Pakistan (1973, just after the last Indo-Pakistani War), a visiting professorship at the Instituto de Fisica e Matemática in Lisbon (1973-74, just before the “Carnation Revolution”), a National Academy of Sciences exchange scientist position in Prague (1979, a decade before the fall of the Berlin Wall), and visiting professorships at Williams and Pomona Colleges (2006 and 2007, respectively). He received an Outstanding Professor of the (then 19 campus) CSU award in 1987, an Outstanding Teaching Award from the MAA in 2005, and an Outstanding Alumnus of Harvey Mudd College award in 2014.
