Kenneth H. Carter

I serve as bishop of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. From 2012-2022 i served as bishop of Florida. From 2018-2020 I was also the president of our Council of Bishops, which includes 12 million members in Africa, Europe, the Philippines and the United States. I was one of three moderators for the UMC's Commission on a Way Forward, a 32 person global body that focused on unity and the inclusion of the LGBTQ community. Previously I was a pastor for 28 years; my ministry at Providence UMC in Charlotte was described by the American Religious historian Diana Butler Bass in her Christianity for the Rest of Us.

I’m also a consulting faculty member and bishop in residence at Duke University Divinity School.

My latest book is Unrelenting Grace (Abingdon, 2023). I’m also the author of God Will Make a Way (Abingdon, 2021), Embracing The Wideness of God's Mercy (Abingdon, 2018) and Fresh Expressions: A New Kind of Methodist Church (Abingdon, 2017, with Audrey Warren).

My hobbies are baseball (Braves, Rays and Spring Training) and Duke basketball, roots music and reading, hiking in the mountains and travel, and eating NC barbecue and Fl seafood.
