Mary Crawford

Mary Crawford, PhD is Professor Emerita of Psychology and former director of the Women’s Studies Program at the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on women and gender, particularly in contexts of communication, health and sexuality. She has spoken and written about the psychology of women and gender for audiences as diverse as the British Psychological Society, Ms. Magazine and the Oprah Winfrey show. Professor Crawford is a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society. She has authored more than 50 research articles and 10 books including a popular text for students, Transformations: Women, Gender, and Psychology. Her most recent research is on the health, psychological well-being and social progress of South Asian women. As a Fulbright Senior Scholar, she lived and worked in Kathmandu, Nepal, where she investigated the trafficking of young girls into prostitution and wrote the book Sex Trafficking in South Asia: Telling Maya’s Story. Currently, she works as a consultant with anti-trafficking researchers and activists and is writing a memoir.
