Cary Holladay teaches Creative Writing at the University of Memphis. Her stories have been anthologized in New Stories from the South: The Year's Best and appear frequently in major literary magazines. Her story, "Merry-Go-Sorry," based on the case of the West Memphis Three, appeared in Alaska Quarterly Review and won an O. Henry Prize.
She has received fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Tennessee Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
She has two new books coming out in 2013:
-- Horse People: Stories was chosen by Michael Griffith, editor, Yellow Shoe Fiction Series, for Lousiana State University Press.
-- The Deer in the Mirror: Stories and a Novella won the Ohio State University Prize in Short Fiction.
A native of Virginia, Cary enjoys folklore, birdwatching, old cookbooks, and taking care of cats. She listens to Neil Diamond, Pink Floyd, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Once she wrote a story just to put the BeeGees in it.
She lives in Memphis with her husband, the writer John Bensko.
