Michael L. Wehmeyer

Michael L. Wehmeyer, PhD, is Distinguished Professor Emeritus in and former chairperson of the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas. His research focused on self-determination and self-determined learning, the application of positive psychology and strengths-based approaches to disability, and the education of students with intellectual or developmental disabilities. He is past Director and Senior Scientist at Kansas University's Beach Center on Disability. He also formerly directed the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities. He has published more than 50 books and almost 500 scholarly articles and book chapters on topics related to special education, applications of positive psychology to disability, intellectual disability, and self-determination. He is a Fellow and past-president of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. His important book collection on the history of eugenics and intellectual disability is housed in the Archives of the History of American Psychology at the Cummings Center, University of Akron. He is co-founder of Brothers' Fine and Collectible Books, a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association and the Texas Booksellers Association.
