Sheldon Lewis

Sheldon Lewis' passion is reconciliation. He studied at the University of Chicago and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where he was a student of Prof. Abraham Joshua Heschel and a witness and active participant in the turbulent 60's. He served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army including a year in Vietnam where the experiences of war were seared into his consciousness. He served as a congregational rabbi at Kol Emeth in Palo Alto, CA for most of his rabbinic career. He was active in human rights causes and in peacemaking both on the local level and around the globe. He was especially engaged in the struggle for the liberation of Russian Jews. After 9/11, as a personal response, he began a search for peacemaking wisdom in Jewish sacred texts, an effort which yielded this volume.
