Originally trained in zoology, Alan attended McGill University and obtained the Ph.D. in literature at Rutgers. He has taught at Georgia Tech and UNC Charlotte, where his teaching and research explore the intersections among science, technology, and culture in the nineteenth century. His published books include Useful Knowledge (Duke, 2001), One Culture, The Mummy!, England in 1815, Dolphin and Sloth (both with Reaktion). His recent TedX talk explores real and fictional animals. Alan’s articles in children’s literature have focused on Charles Kingsley, Jane Loudon, Maria Hack, Ellenor Fenn, Ann Murry, and Margaret Gatty. His current project is devoted to understanding the role of women in the translation and dissemination of knowledge in the 19th century.
