Alfred G. Gerteiny

Dr. Alfred G. Gerteiny is an author, lecturer and consultant on the Middle East, Islam, Terrorism, International security, and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. He lectures, writes and comments on US-MENA Relations. Gerteiny grew up in Heliopolis, Egypt, the son of the Secretary of the Institut Français d'Archaeologie Orientale du Caire. He studied International Politics and International Law, in Paris and The Hague, and earned a Ph.D. in History, in New York. In the course of an academic career in the US, he undertook extensive field work in Africa and the Middle East, some as a Sr. Research Fulbright Fellow, and a Phelp-Stokes Fellow. He served as an occasional consultant to the US State Department on Mauritania, and to AURA (the Associated University for Research in Astronomy) during the scientific expedition to Mauritania concerned with the 1973 historic total solar eclipse. A contributor to several encyclopedias, including Britannica, Americana and Collier, he is also a Member of the Editorial Board of NOVA's International Journal of Ethics.
