James Kushlan is an writer, biologist, educator, and conservationist. His professional positions have included research associate at the Smithsonian Institution, of the director U.S. Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, professor of biology at the University of Mississippi and Texas A&M, Commerce, and wildlife biologist with the U.S. National Park Service. He has been president of the American Ornithological Society and Waterbird Society, senior author of the North American Waterbird Conservation Plan, and founder and chair of Waterbird Conservation for the Americas, Bahamas Environment Fund, Bird Conservation Alliance, and the IUCN Heron Specialist Group. He serves on the governing boards of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Zoo Miami Foundation, Everglades Foundation, and on advisory boards at the University of Miami and BirdLife International. He has a PhD from the University of Miami and two honorary doctorates. He has published over 250 technical papers and 10 books, most recently Seeking the American Tropics: South Florida’s Early Naturalists, Dry Tortugas National Park, Biscayne National Park, Attracting Birds to South Florida Gardens, Birds of Fairchild, and Key Biscayne. Dr. Kushlan lives in Coconut Grove, Florida, and Annapolis, Maryland.
