Stephen J. Rockwell

Stephen J. Rockwell is Professor of Political Science at St. Joseph's University, New York. Previously, he was a Senior Research Analyst at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC.

Rockwell's essay, "How Big Government Won the West," is designed for use in college and high school classrooms, where it can serve as a foundation for discussion and debate about the vast and under-appreciated scope and influence of the federal government in the nineteenth century.

Rockwell's book, Indian Affairs and the Administrative State in the Nineteenth Century (Cambridge University Press, 2010), was nominated for the Best Book award in the American Society for Public Administration's Section on Public Administration Research. The book has been reviewed in the Journal of American History, American Historical Review, Administrative Theory & Praxis, Public Voices, and the American Political Science Association's Perspectives on Politics.
