Shahn Majid was born in Patna, India but grew up in the UK, mostly in leafy Hampstead, London, where he still lives. He is married with two children. With degrees from Cambridge and Harvard, he has written more than 200 research papers, mostly pure mathematical but also about physics and his lifelong search for a theory of quantum gravity and the true nature of physical reality. In 2019 he used quantum Riemannian geometry to construct quantum gravity in a baby universe consisting of just one quadrilateral. Holder of several research fellowships over the years, he was awarded an international one-time Bleuler Medal in 1993 for his work on quantum spacetime and has been featured in a photographic exhibition Faces of Math. He has appeared more than once on national BBC TV and has a still-topical series of 10 blogs posts associated to his edited popular science volume On Space and Time. You can find more information on his extensive Queen Mary home pages.
