David Worrall

David R Worrall (avatar.com.au) is an Australian-born composer and sound artist working a range of genres, including data sonification, sound sculpture and immersive polymedia (a term he coined in 1986) as well as traditional instrumental music composition. He performs, exhibits and teaches internationally. His creative practice encompasses a number of endeavors: instrumental and electroacoustic composition, sound poetry and sound installations including those that utilize his own designed and constructed geodesic Portable Immersive Polymedia Event Spaces.

Worrall develops software for music composition, text transformation and sonification. His PhD dissertation was on the development of a software framework for information sonification in large multivariate data sets, such as those from securities trading engines. He employed these in his own trading, which led him to establish an investment mentoring business to assist non-finance professionals to independently manage their own portfolios.

He has been active as an organizer and representative of various professional and community organizations. He has worked as a full-time academic in Australia and the US. He established and became the foundation head (1989-2001) of the Australian Centre for the Arts and Technology at the Australian National University. As a scientific researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, he undertook research in the application of sound to the diagnosis of sleep aponea and the sonification of large networks. He is currently a professor in the Audio Arts and Acoustics Department at Columbia College Chicago and an adjunct senior research fellow in the School of Music, the Australian National University.
