Susan Mandel Glazer

Susan Mandel Glazer is Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Reading/Language Arts and the Founder and Director of the Center for Reading and Writing at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. She received her Ed.D. in Literacy Education from the University of Pennsylvania. During the course of her illustrious career, Dr. Glazer has authored and coauthored 17 books and more than 200 articles and columns, as well as numerous chapters in edited volumes. Some of her books include Portfolios and Beyond: Collaborative Assessment in Reading and Writing, Teaching All Children to Write: A Little Comprehensive Guide, "Phonics, Spelling, and  Word Study,  and "Assessment IS Instruction: Reading, Writing, Spelling and Phonics for ALL Learners, all also published by Christopher-Gordon. She served as President of the International Reading Association in 1994-1995.

Susan Mandel Glazer has spent 50 of her 72 years in classrooms in 29 countries and all of the United States. "Professional development is inadequate," she says. "Most school systems don't provide teachers with the tools they need to fulfill their most important responsibility of guiding children how to learn. Teachers haven't failed. The systems have failed the teachers!"

As a young professor, Susan saw that her graduate students needed a hands-on facility to practice what they were learning in their coursework. She requested a classroom space, and her graduate students began to guide the children of Rider faculty and staff to become effective readers and writers. Once word spread, the after-school and summer programs grew, and the Center for Reading and Writing officially opened its doors to the community in 1980. Susan creates the on-campus practicum at the center, and her graduate students have worked with more than 7,000 kids.

Nearly 30 years later, the Center for Reading and Writing is recognized worldwide as a place for exceptional literacy training. The Center also provides parent education, teacher education and a resource for school personnel.
