Uwe Carsten Scharf

I am a Part-Time Faculty Member at the rank of an "Instructor" at Regent University's School of Divinity in beautiful Virginia Beach, Virginia.

I hold a B.D. (Bachelor of Divinity) from the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Ruschlikon, Switzerland, an S.T.M. (Master of Sacred Theology) from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a Ph.D. in Philosophical Theology from the University of Virginia. I am an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). My doctoral dissertation focused on the works of Paul Tillich and his understanding of "revelation" as "paradox" and "breakthrough." My book on Amazon is a (slightly) revised and (significantly) expanded version of my Ph.D. dissertation from UVA in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Until November 2016 I was the sole CPE Supervisor at the Sentara School for Clinical Pastoral Education in Norfolk, VA. I am also the former Director of Pastoral Care & CPE at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, as well as the previous Associate Director of Pastoral Services at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC. I bring 20 years of experience in pastoral/spiritual care, crisis ministry, theological studies, and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) with me. I have joined Regent University's School of Divinity in January 2017 as a Part-Time Faculty Member.

On a personal note: I am the proud father of my daughter Uma who studies at Colorado College in beautiful Colorado Springs. She is in her fourth year and is majoring in Neuro-Science. I am happily married to my wife Andrea and we became first time grandparents when Andrea's older son Jeremy was blessed with the birth of his son Noah in April of 2017. We became grandparents a second time in July 2017 when Andrea's younger son Blake was blessed with the birth of his son Ezekiel. My wife's family is from the Hampton Roads area and my parents and my brother still live in Koeln, Germany. My parents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September 2016. My dad is a retired minister of a Charismatic Baptist church that had grown under his leadership from 30 members to 300+ members within a decade of its inception (and yes: it is somewhat unusual to be a Baptist or a Charismatic in Germany--and the combination of the two is even rarer!).

Andrea and I are active in our church in Portsmouth: West Side Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she is a deacon and I am an elder. We enjoy spending time with each other and with family, going out to the movies and to concerts and to eat out occasionally. We are an international and interracial couple: Andrea is African-American and I am first generation European-American, having emigrated from Germany 30 years ago at the age of 25!
