Daniel C. Snell

I grew up in Michigan and California and graduated from Stanford University in 1971 and got a Ph.D. from Yale in 1975, and then taught history at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, 2018, when I became emeritus professor, meaning I retired. I still live in an old house in central Norman with some very old dogs and a cat and serve on Norman Public School's elected Board.

With my wife, I try to travel to interesting places; last year those included Israel, Egypt, and Ireland. I had been a student at the Hebrew University many years ago, and lo, and behold, they had moved the university! They hadn't moved much in Egypt, though, or in Ireland for that matter.

I am interested in the Historical Novel, and readers find that some of my books have historical vignettes that enrich the stories with slight fictions. I taught a course on the Historical Novel for many years, and probably should write something scholarly about the genre. But I am also at work on creating my own fictional worlds in the Ancient Near East.

Now I am trying to complete a second edition of the Companion the the Ancient Near East, including new essays by distinguished scholars. The first edition was useful to many readers, and I'm hoping the new one will be equally helpful.
